SHEET S-106EXTERIOR · DECKS & PORCHES
Deck builder on Staten Island
New decks, rebuilds and porch repairs on proper footings and properly attached ledgers, in pressure-treated lumber or composite.
Decks & Porches
Scope of work
Deck failures almost always start at the connections: a ledger board nailed to the house instead of bolted and flashed, undersized footings, or rusted joist hangers. We build the frame to code first (footings below frost depth, bolted and flashed ledger, hot-dipped or stainless hardware), then deck it with your choice of boards.
We also rebuild front porches, replace porch floors, columns and railings, and resurface decks whose frames are still sound. Resurfacing is often half the cost of a full rebuild when the framing passes inspection.
What's included
- New decks with concrete footings below frost line
- Ledger attachment with through-bolts or structural screws and flashing
- Pressure-treated, cedar and composite decking
- Code-height railings and graspable stair rails
- Deck resurfacing on sound frames
- Front porch floors, columns, steps and railings
- Staining and sealing (see exterior painting)

Decks on Staten Island lots
Permits. In NYC, a new deck, or rebuilding the structure of an existing one, generally needs a Department of Buildings filing, and zoning yard rules apply. We'll check your lot before design so the deck you want is one the city will approve.
Raised homes. Many East and South Shore houses were elevated after Hurricane Sandy, which turned simple back steps into tall stairs and landings. Those need proper landings, guards and lateral bracing. It's a lot of what we rebuild.
Composite near the water. Composite boards don't rot, splinter or need staining, which matters with salt air and summer sun. Pressure-treated still makes sense for the framing and for budget builds.

FAQ
Decks & porches questions
Composite or wood decking?
Composite costs more up front but needs no staining, won't splinter, and lasts decades. Pressure-treated wood is the budget option and needs cleaning and sealing every couple of years. Either way, the frame underneath is pressure-treated lumber.
Can you replace just the deck boards?
If the joists, beams, ledger and footings are sound, yes. We inspect the frame first and replace only what's failed.
