Pavers, Patios, Driveways & Masonry
Scope of work
Pavers that sink, rock or grow weeds were laid on a thin base. The pattern is the easy part. The excavation and compacted gravel underneath decide whether a driveway is still flat in ten years. We dig out to the right depth for the load (deeper for a driveway than a patio), compact the base in layers, screed the bedding, lay the pattern, cut clean edges, and lock it all with edge restraint and joint sand.
We also rebuild the masonry around the paving: front stoops and steps, garden and retaining walls, brick re-pointing, and concrete repairs.
What's included
- Removal of old concrete, asphalt or pavers
- Excavation and compacted gravel base, sized for driveway or foot traffic
- Interlocking concrete pavers, natural stone and permeable paver options
- Herringbone, running-bond, basketweave and border patterns
- Edge restraint, polymeric joint sand and sealing on request
- Front stoops and steps in brick, block or stone
- Segmental retaining walls and garden walls
- Brick re-pointing and concrete repair
Local conditions
Building hardscape for Staten Island winters
Freeze–thaw. New York winters freeze and thaw dozens of times. Water that sits in a weak base expands and lifts pavers. Proper base depth, compaction and pitch away from the house are what stop that.
Drainage and the street. Driveways should pitch water to the street or to a drain, never toward the garage or foundation. Work on the public sidewalk, or any change to a curb cut, falls under NYC DOT and DOB rules. We'll tell you when that applies to your job.
Permeable pavers. In low-lying neighborhoods where yards pond after storms, permeable pavers let rainwater drain into a stone reservoir under the surface instead of running into the street or the basement.

FAQ
Pavers & masonry questions
Are pavers better than concrete for a driveway?
Pavers cost more up front but flex with freeze–thaw instead of cracking, and a damaged section can be lifted and relaid without visible patches. Poured concrete is cheaper and fine on a stable base, but cracks are permanent. Both last when the base is built right.
How long until I can drive on new pavers?
Usually right away once the joint sand is installed and compacted. If we use polymeric sand, we'll ask you to keep traffic and water off it for the cure time on the bag, typically a day or so.
Do you repair sunken pavers?
Yes. We lift the affected area, fix the base underneath, and relay the same pavers so the repair blends in.
